popular destinations: The Eu

Travel to the EU from the UK follows the process using the standard Animal Health Certificate (AHC) framework.

In order to comply with the AHC requirements, the purpose of travel must be "non-commercial". In order to be classed as such, the following criteria must be met:

  • The purpose of movement must not be aimed at the sale or transfer of ownership of the animal(s).
  • The animal(s) must travel with the owner OR
  • The animal(s) may travel with a person carrying written authorisation from the owner to do so and the owner must arrive at the destination within 5 days of the pet (before or after).
  • During the period of travel, the animal(s) must remain the responsibility of the owner or the person authorised to transport the animal(s) - this can be a pet courier or transport company - provided the owner arrives within 5 days of the animal(s).

An AHC for EU travel can be issued 21 days after a primary rabies vaccination (or immediately after a booster). Once issued, the AHC is valid for 10 days to enter the EU, and so we recommend booking an appointment to review and receive your AHC around 5 days or less before travel which allows for any last minute changes to travel arrangements or delay (although an appointment can be made any time within the 10 day window).

On the day of your appointment, we will:

  • Check your pet's microchip number corresponds with the details provided in advance by you.

  • Check all your personal details are correct.

  • Administer or witness administration of worming treatment when required (tapeworm treatment is required prior to travelling to Northern Ireland, Ireland, Malta, Norway and Finland).

  • Ensure you sign the included declaration confirming that the movement is not commercial.

  • Explain all the details of the AHC to you and answer any questions.

Please note:

Although it is called an Animal "Health" Certificate, the process for EU travel does not include a health check of your pet.
